St. Peter's Episcopal Church
Capital Campaign

-June 2008 -
Goal of $3,000,000 reached!
St. Peter's Endowment to contribute additional $1,000,000.

A red door beckons you to enter a heavenly refuge in the heart of Charlotte. As you enter the historic structure of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, you encounter a sublime sanctuary of worship, community, spiritual formation and ministry. St. Peter's is the oldest structure located on Tryon St. in Uptown Charlotte. The building is almost 120 years old.

We will preserve and share our historic building for generations to come.

A tithe of ten percent of funds raised will be dedicated to an outreach fund that will serve to build upon and strengthen the commitment of community outreach, especially to those in need, that is central to our mission as a parish.

We know everyone is eager to learn more about the exciting projects planned for the parish that will be supported by the “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” Capital Campaign.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - Updated August 2008

Now that the capital campaign has ended successfully, when will work begin on our historic worship space?

Work will begin after the building committee has selected an architect. The architect and the building committee will work with our general contractor, Hostetter & Keach, on a detailed plan for renovations and for placing a new organ. The building committee will present that plan, along with a budget, to the Vestry in October. With Vestry approval, the building committee will devise a work schedule and participate with the city of Charlotte in the building permit process. By April 2009, we anticipate construction on our worship space will begin.

Where will our services be held while construction is in progress?

The congregation will worship in the Martha Bowles Parish Hall, starting when construction begins. The Parish Hall can seat as many as 200 comfortably for a service. For special days, such as Easter, we may find an alternate location nearby.

Will we make any alterations in the Parish Hall to make it more conducive to holding services?

We will place risers on the end of the Parish Hall nearest Seventh Street and that is where the altar will be. We might rent a small organ to supplement the piano which is already there. The church has a portable sound system that can help with acoustics. It’s possible we can find a short-term way to improve lighting. The choir will be seated in the rear of the Parish Hall near the doors to the kitchen.

When will we move back into the main worship space?

The building committee envisions a return to the renovated worship space by Christmas 2009.

When will the decision on organ placement be made and who will make it?

Brian Simpson, co-chair of the Knocking On Heaven’s Door capital campaign and chair of the Building Committee, anticipates presenting a recommendation on organ placement and basic organ specifications to the Vestry at a special meeting, most likely in October.

Along with the recommendation on organ placement, Simpson will deliver the building committee’s suggestions on all elements of the worship space renovation. This includes work on the exterior narthex design and all interior design issues, materials, HVAC system, lighting design, renovation/repair/replacement of floors and walls, roof and flashing repairs and exterior landscaping plans.

The Vestry will make the final decision on organ placement and renovations expeditiously, most likely in November.

When will organ installation begin?

Organ installation is tentatively scheduled to start in summer 2010.

Where will we hold services while the organ is installed?

We will continue to worship in our renovated, historic space while the organ is installed.

When will the congregation get to see plans for the organ?

After an architect is chosen, that person and his firm will work with our general contractor Hostetter & Keach and the Building Committee to devise organ placement plans as well as plans for our renovations. The Vestry will view those plans and decide whether to accept them. Once they are accepted, they will appear on this Website and in various other communications.

A MESSAGE FROM BILL WILLIAMSON, CAMPAIGN CHAIR

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church accomplished one of its biggest goals ever when the Knocking On Heaven’s Door capital campaign reached its $3 million target on June 2.

A victory celebration is being planned for October.

“We can’t say ‘thank you’ enough,” said Bill Williamson, campaign co-chair. “It’s impressive that a church our size could raise $3 million dollars in challenging economic times. Gifts of $100 up to $5,000, spread over as long as five years, made the difference.”

Drive co-chair Brian Simpson said many people played a part in reaching the goal. “Bill and I want to thank all the volunteers and everyone who decided to join our historic effort. Now we can ensure that St. Peter’s will be a force for good in our community for decades to come.”

Meeting the goal brings another $1 million to the campaign from the St. Peter’s Endowment.

With the $4 million, plus other pledges and gifts anticipated throughout the summer, St. Peter’s will make much-needed repairs to our 116-year-old worship space, replace our aging organ and fund outreach initiatives.

Additional Gifts Can Mean More Improvements

As more pledges and gifts stream in, the Knocking On Heaven’s Door capital campaign is encouraging these commitments that come after the official deadline.

“A gift of any size is welcome,” drive co-chair Bill Williamson said. “We need every dollar, because we may be able to fund projects we thought we couldn’t afford.”

A fire-suppression system is an example, drive co-chair Brian Simpson said. Such a system was left off official plans for renovations to our historic worship space. With more money, this feature could be added.

“We also could include a heating and air-conditioning system that can perform even better than the one we identified,” Simpson said.

Simpson cautioned that construction costs keep rising. “The more money we bring in, the better able we’ll be to meet unanticipated costs,” he said.
