A Literacy Project that Changes Lives Two at a Time

The mission of The Augustine Project at St. Peter’s is to provide free one on one tutoring to low income children and
teens who are significantly behind in literacy skills.  We do this by training and supporting volunteers who participate
in a two week workshop which includes preparing and giving lessons to children in a coached practicum.

Research tells us that children who fall behind in literacy skills do not make up lost ground without some sort of intervention.  A child who does learn to read and write will face his own economic tough times regardless of the state of our economy.  We can think of the Augustine Project then as preventative, rather than a reaction to the economic crisis we are experiencing now.

The foundation of our lessons is the Orton-Gillingham approach which is multi-sensory, phonemic, systematic and explicit.  Tutors purchase a kit of materials from the Wilson Language System which form the basis of their lessons.
Child Reading We currently have more than thirty Augustine tutors providing children and teens in our community with two prescriptive lessons a week. More than one tutor is providing free tutoring to two or more children.

There are many more children who need our help.
Teachers frequently ask for tutors for their classrooms.
Parents contact us at the suggestion of teachers and other professionals.

Our training dates in 2010 have not been set, but if you wish to be informed when dates are announced, please contact Candace Armstrong at armstrong4300@bellsouth.net.

To provide financial help to train more volunteers, please send contributions to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, marked for the Augustine Project.
