The Augustine Project at St. Peter's
A Literacy Project that Changes Lives Two at a Time
The mission of The Augustine Project at St. Peter’s is to provide free one on one tutoring to low income children and
teens
who are significantly behind in literacy skills. We do this by training and supporting volunteers who participate
in a two week workshop which includes preparing and giving lessons to children in a coached practicum.
The foundation of our lessons is a multi-sensory approach which contains the five components of effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonemics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Tutors use Wilson Reading Systems materials to plan lessons in a systematic way with explicit instruction based on the needs of their Augustine children.
There are many more children who need our help.
Teachers frequently ask for tutors for their classrooms.
Parents contact us at the suggestion of teachers and other professionals.
We will offer our annual training workshop:
Sept. 13-24, Monday-Friday
For more information, please contact Candace Armstrong at armstrong4300@bellsouth.net.
To provide financial help to train more volunteers, please send contributions to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, marked for the Augustine Project.
