A Literacy Project that Changes Lives Two at a Time

The mission of the Augustine Project is to improve the reading, writing and spelling abilities of low-income children
and teens who struggle with literacy skills. We do this by training and supporting volunteer tutors who provide free,
long term, 1-to-1 instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach and Wilson Reading System® materials.

Research tells us that children who fall behind in literacy skills do not make up lost ground without some sort of intervention.  A child who does not learn to read and write will face his own economic tough times regardless of the state of our economy.  We can think of the Augustine Project then as preventative, helping a child develop the survival skills of the 21st century.

Thanks to the hard work and commitment of our tutors Augustine students showed improvement in reading skills such as  phonics, fluency, and comprehension in 2009-2010.

Currently 37 Augustine tutors serve local children and teens in eighteen schools and other community sites.  Several of our seasoned tutors continue to work with their original Augustine student establishing a long term relationship.

We welcome opportunities to explain our program and our training to school groups and other community organizations as well as individuals.

To provide financial help to train more volunteers, please send contributions to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, marked for the Augustine Project.
