About St. Peter's

The Episcopal Church is part of the world wide Anglican Communion and embodies a heritage that includes attitudes reflective of both ancient and contemporary Catholicism and Protestantism.

St. Peter's was founded in 1834 as the first Episcopal Mission in Charlotte at a time when Mecklenburg County was composed of just a series of small villages. In 1857, St. Peter's moved to the current location at the corner of Seventh and Tryon Streets. This "Little Church" was razed and replaced in 1892 with the structure that proudly sits there today. We recently completed renovating the Church and replacing our old pipe organ with a wonderful new Fisk organ. We will continue to preserve this beautiful building for generations to come. As the city of Charlotte has grown, so has St. Peters, providing the community with a large body of contributions that have been examples of lasting achievements through faith, courage, and ceaseless devotion to Christian causes. St. Peter's has been an integral part of the development and renewal of the downtown Charlotte community.

As an Episcopal parish, we believe in maintaining a strong tie to our traditional values while being adaptable to the changing times of the early 21st century. We want to remain open to the leading of the Spirit as God draws people who are often different from one another, by providing opportunities for interaction and the learning and acceptance that comes from being open to the Spirit. We do this by providing opportunities for fellowship, outreach, worship and spiritual growth.

Saint Peter's is often used for weddings, baptisms, and funerals for both our standing members and for members of our larger city family who may not have a direct affiliation. Please contact the church office and arrange an appointment to visit with our Rector to discuss your particular situation.

The Memorial Garden and Columbarium

At the time of death, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church offers two choices to members who desire their bodies to be cremated with the cremains being cared for on church property.
The Columbarium which is located in the Chapel has 7 niches remaining from the original 30.  Urns containing the ashes are used for this choice with a brass plaque mounted on the outside.
The Memorial Garden is on the south side of the church.  Space is designated for the ashes to be interred directly into the soil.  The brass plaque on the wall identifies those whose cremains are interred.
